Success! We completed our very first Pizza Farm Camping Trip! Sawmill Pizza and Brew Shed was our final stop before we returned to life with comfortable beds and lots of salads.
We left early from our campsite, making the hard choice to pass on the mini golf course just a few feet from our tent, getting coffee at a little shop in the direction of Sawmill lunch and eventually our showers. We arrived shortly after Sawmill Pizza opened and were the second customers of the day. When the staff learned that it was our first time, they walked us through the ordering process and gave us a rundown of the menu. It was small and unique! There was a pepperoni pizza that was pretty classic, but the other options were much less conventional. Through my research I had read multiple reviews that the Spicy Jameese and the Expectant Mother were odd-sounding, but totally worked and the staff confirmed that most customers report a certain skepticism, but leave pleasantly surprised. The pizzas are quite large, but with the option to split it among two styles. We decided to go with the Spicy Jameese and a chicken bacon ranch. And we can join the rest of the pleasantly surprised pizza eaters that agree that strawberry, tomato, sriracha, and cheddar doesn’t necessarily sound great, but it works quite nicely together in the pizza. We also enjoyed learning that the idea for the pizza came from a dream. I can’t wait to dream of my first pizza topping combination.
Before Pizza #2 came out of the oven, we grabbed a drink from the Brew Shed and walked around the grounds a bit. Sawmill Pizza isn’t an active farm, but they source most of their ingredients from the nearby farms and use some of their garden grown herbs. The sun was shining, there were lots of flowers, the seating areas were nicely shaded, some classic cars rolled up, and it was hard not to feel good. Although once we finished that pizza, we didn’t waste any time hitting the road for home. It was a pretty great weekend, but we were happy to head home.
