Sometimes we go to the pizza farm even if the weather forecast says scattered thunderstorms, heavy rain, and possible flooding. And so far it has always been worth it.
Last night we showed up to Red Barn Farm of Northfield in groups staggered throughout the evening. Car Number One arrived just after 5pm and it wasn’t exactly sunny, but it certainly wasn’t raining. The ominous skies made for a smaller crowd than last time I visited and several groups picked out tables in the big Red Barn that is opened to pizza eaters on rainy Wednesdays. We optimistically set up our blankets and chairs in the open next to the vineyards. I took the opportunity to walk around while we waited for our pizza and take a couple photographs just in case it started pouring.
We ordered the Greek, the Northfield (sausage and peppers), and the Cheese, knowing that other folks would be joining us so leftovers would be ok. After a short wait, we sat outside and enjoyed our pizza. Just as were finishing and as Car Number Two showed up, we felt enough sprinkles of rain to relocate to an area under the barn’s patio. We added the Hannah (an everything style pizza) to our pile of pizza boxes and continued eating. Kristy and Laurie, proud owners of Car Number Two AKA Vancy Sinatra, showed some true pizza farm expertise by bringing a cooler on wheels full of grated cheese, olive oil, red pepper flakes, hot sauce, sparkling wine, and bubbly water. It really took Pizza Night to the next level.
Right around the time Car Number Three was showing up the rain started coming down significantly harder and with the strong winds pushing it under our shelter, we once again had to relocate up the stairs and into the Red Barn. It is always pleasant to eat outside, but as a back-up for rainy weather, the Red Barn was perfect. Luke and Annalise of Car Number Three informed us of the good news that the tornado warning was in the opposite direction of the pizza farm. I had imagined that the inclement weather might mean we would head home early, but in the dry comfort of the barn, we ended up staying just as late and maybe even a little later than we would have otherwise. By the time we drove home, the rain had passed and I only fell asleep in the backseat for a short time.
Ha!! Thanks for the @vancysinatra shout out! She is so proud to have taken us on our 1st (hopefully not last!) pizza farm adventure with you, Gina. That stormy August night was surely unforgettable, but the pizza is what I will always remember. And of course our accouterment of next level toppings.
