Fear not. I continue to eat pizza on a regular basis. Occasionally I will take advantage of the options for carry-out and delivery and outdoor dining. Sometimes at home, I will go so far as to make a frozen pizza. I have yet to attend a Pizza Farm for this season and I am undecided if I will.
Many Pizza Farms are still open. I have even added a couple to my map and list that I didn’t know about until this year, including The Farm at Glenwood Mountain in New Jersey and a pop-up by Hilltown Hot Pies in upstate NY.
Many Pizza Farms have decided to suspend service. Some have made the decision to cancel completely for 2020. A couple Farms, Two Pony Gardens outside of Minneapolis and New City Urban Farm in Michigan are posting updates as they haven’t fully decided if Pizza Farm Season 2020 will work for them.
The Pizza Farms that are still open have taken all the required and many extra precautions to keep guests and employees safe and healthy. The mission of a Pizza Farm is to serve nutritious and delicious food to their community, so it is not surprising to see health and safety as top priorities for many of these businesses.
The truth is, things can change drastically in a short period of time. Sure, we all knew this at some level. 2020 has given us multiple opportunities to experience this truth. I have taken the time to update all of the links on this website so that Pizza Farm travelers can have access to the most up to date information before they make their decision about when and where to eat pizza during a pandemic.
Updating the website was discouraging at times. I read many statements from Pizza Farmers describing their heavy hearts and their difficult decisions. I had to sit with my own decision making process and consider the risks of traveling to a Pizza Farm.
I also found it inspiring and comforting to check in on Pizza Farmers that I have come to think of as modern day heroes. Some of them I even consider to be my friends. Even on the Pizza Farms that are not serving in 2020, the important work of farming continues. North Star Homestead Farm posted some updates about how small, ethical farmers can be an ally during a pandemic.
It is a difficult time for everyone. Please consider the safest ways that you can support your local farmers.
